As a former student of John and Pam’s, Sophie has been a part of the China Folk House Retreat community from the beginning. In 2017 she studied abroad in Yunnan with John and Pam on the China Fieldwork Semester, where she saw the house as it originally was in China. In 2019 she worked as part of “Camp Wholesome” to put the house back together again in West Virginia. Her experience abroad inspired her to study East Asian Studies at Amherst College and, after graduation, to go on a Fulbright to Taiwan, where she worked as an English Teaching Assistant for two years. After studying Chinese for another six months at National Taiwan Normal University, she moved back to DC, where she is excited to be CFHR’s Program Coordinator. Her time working as an English teacher and her love of arts such as woodblock printmaking has given her new appreciation for the importance of experiential learning, especially when it comes to cultural exchange. She is excited to contribute to such a vibrant community that is devoted to promoting understanding between cultures.
